Redknapp – why I could not go

Harry Redknapp took some time to think over the Newcastle job offer before deciding that he could not leave Pompey ‘as it is where his heart is’, among many other things.

As he told sky sports news in a fantastic interview it was the club, the fans, the players and of course his family that had convinced him to stay with us: ‘I’m happy here. I enjoy it here. The fans, I have got a great relationship with them. I had to win them back over again after leaving before, I did that.

‘I enjoy it. This is where I enjoy being. This is my club. It would be too big a wrench for me to leave here.

‘It was my decision. This is where I really want to be. When I brought a lot of good players in the summer we sold them the club.

‘They could have joined bigger clubs but they came here. To walk away when we are half way through it would have sent the wrong signal.

‘I looked at it but my heart is here.

‘The club, Portsmouth, is my club. I think to walk away when the supporters are enjoying the football and having a great season, the club is in great shape, things are going well so to walk away and kick it into touch wouldn’t be right.

‘I would find it difficult to sleep at night having done that. The club has been great to me and I want to repay that’.

And who says there is no loyalty in football anymore eh!

We have not been able to hide our delight at his decision to stay, I was like the cat that got the cream yesterday – but who then got the beers – but having just this minute having had the chance for the first time I have now seen the whole interview on sky sports, so I am even more delighted – if you have not seen or heard the 8 minute plus interview in its entirety click here

I have said it before, but I will say it again if anyone still has any doubts about Redknapp and still doubts his commitment or loyalty to Pompey then I am sorry but you are wrong, play through the interview in full and you would have to change your opinion surely. Cutting off your nose to spite your face can only happen for so long…

There is a fantastic moment within it where he has a joke about the players that are not in the side and how they are probably disappointed that he has not gone – brilliant.
