Harry Redknapp might say that he is not ‘unhappy’ at the appointment of Fabio Capello as the new England manager, but he does not really seem a happy man to me in general…
He has had a bit of ‘a rant’ in the Daily Mail today about it, firstly listing some names of players saying ‘they do not need coaching’ before going on to say what he really felt: ‘It’s not about coaching! It’s about picking the players, getting them organised, giving them belief, giving them a platform to play without fear and getting the best out of them.
‘It doesn’t need Jurgen Klinsmann or Fabio Capello. Top coaches? It’s a fallacy. I’ve seen one, maybe two in my lifetime, no more.
‘Football is about the management of players. To be manager of England, you don’t have to be a great coach – they don’t exist – you have to be a manager.
‘I’m not unhappy with his appointment. I just think the manager of England should be English’.
To be honest, I love Redknapp to bits but could this not be a touch of ‘sour grapes’ perhaps that he was not given the post that he so desperately wanted?
His chances were ruined by all that ‘arrest’ business, maybe he would not have got the job anyway, but that certainly killed off his chances – and he has been bitter ever since, understandably so at the way he was treated, but as good a job as I am certain that he would have done was he ever realistically going to be the man that the fat cats at the FA were going to turn to…
Talking of these, he also has some words for Brian Barwick, who he felt could have consulted with him in order to at least gain his opinion on the matter: ‘Yeah, I’d like to have spoken to Brian. I know I was never going to get it, but I’m obviously not important. I’ve only managed for more than 1,000 games, 13 seasons in the Premier League, fifth in the Premier League.
‘Great, talk to Sir Alex Ferguson. Then talk to the others. Great, but why not talk to me? I have plenty to say to him’.
That could have been the problem… he has too much to say?
This whole situation is now done and dusted, the post has been given to Capello now hopefully Redknapp can build up his reputation again – after it was dragged through the mud – by doing what he does best, managing Pompey and continuing to prove the doubters wrong!
Lets put this issue to bed now, move on get behind the new man and focus on what Pompey are doing again and make sure that another cracking start – well an even better one than last season – is built on and does not fade away into disappointment in the second half this time as it did last time round, lets hopefully start today with 3 points against Spurs.
