The traditional contract drama involving Kanu is still on going this summer, with him recently reported as saying he wanted 2-years whereas we are offering just the 1. He has however – since the alledged quotes – said that he will sign his new contract.

Harry Redknapp has told The News that despite the new striker signings he has made he does want to keep him and does expect him to sign the contract on offer to him: ‘Peter’s sorting it out. As far as I know he’s going to sign for another year and I want to keep him here.

‘He’s a good player, he’s still got a part to play and gives you something different.

‘We want a squad and up front there’s David Nugent as well, he’s been working hard in pre-season.’

I am bored with this issue and have been from the beginning. I am as fed up as I guess most of you are with it and just want the matter put to bed one way or another. It seems a fairly straight forward thing really, we seem to want to keep him, he says he wants to say – he is offered a contract, so if he wants to stay he signs it, if not he does not and goes!

I will keep my thoughts fairly simple – as I have said countless times I would be happy for the 30-something-year-old to stay this season, but if he will not accept the terms we are offering to him then we show him the door, easy as that. I appreciate what he has done for us, but he must also appreciate what we have done for him too! I feel he could still make an impact – from the bench – this season, but to be honest he probably needs us more than we need him now – it may sound harsh, but in all honesty it’s true… Or am I being too harsh?

The Nigerian is expected to feature in our opening pre-season friendly at Exeter tomorrow, having been given an extended time off following a busy summer schedule. The returning Peter Crouch is also said to be ready to play some part of that game too.
