Pompey talk with sneakay

We can now see what sneakay had to say when asked a few questions about Pompey, the season just gone and the one ahead along with the ‘possible’ future ahead.

Vital Pompey has previously brought you the ‘knowing me knowing you series’ – which is still running, so others will be added and if you want to do one just email – and we had the ‘talking Pompey with’ series last summer, this now returns under a new name and some fresh questions as ‘Pompey talk with’…

sneakay was asked 6 questions about the 2008/09 season and what the hopes are for the 2009/10, one and indeed our future, is.

This is what they said…

  • So, sum up the 2008/09 season in 3 words?
Optimistic, Disbelief, Uncertain – My three words describe how I felt as the season started, the mid way point, and at the end.

  • Suddenly things seem ‘a lot brighter’ for Pompey with Dr SAF taking over – what are your hopes/aspirations under the new ownership? Assuming everything goes through!
To break trend I am still calling him Dr AlF, but ‘IF’ everything goes through then I hope that firstly Paul Hart will go back to director of Youth Operations and continue what looks like being a very promising start. I really hope that Linvoy goes in to help him in this position. I think a youth coach is where he should end up at Pompey.

I hope that we can get a decent manager. There are plenty of names being thrown into the ring, and I really hope we pick a manager for the right reason and not just because they are a big name. Bilic has always been the choice for me. I think he shows great passion and has a desire to succeed. Plus he looks like a dark haired Eminem which I find amusing!

The training ground and redevelopment of Fratton are must be done’s also in order to take the club forward, I am sure that Dr AlF knows this though.

The last thing will be to balance the squad. We do need some key individuals especially in the centre of midfield to save us from more relegation troubles next season. I still believe that either Niko or Crouch should be sold this summer as they can’t play in the same formation, so perhaps a big name player to come in for one of them would also be required. I think that is all we will need to start taking the club in the right direction. From this point it will really be down to the owner as too how fast he wants the clubs rise to be. Slow and steady would be ideal for most supporters I guess, but for a businessman where time is money I can see quite a few changes ahead on the horizon.

  • Which players – that we could realistically sign – would you like to see arrive this summer?
As mentioned already I think a couple of central midfielders will be key for us next season. Someone with a lot of flair and creativity would be great, someone like Matías Fernández who is currently playing for Villarreal. He is quick, creative, a free kick specialist and could really be worth a punt.

The defensive midfielder that I would like to come in would be someone like Jeremy Toulalan who is currently at Lyon and battling Diarra for a spot in the French national side. Reports say that he would however cost around £20 million, and he probably would only want Champions League football. If not him then possibly Lorik Cana who is also playing in the French Leagues at the moment at Marseille.

I do also think that we probably need a winger and Barnetta or Bentley would be ideal for us down the right hand-side or perhaps Wesley Sneijder seeing that he may become surplus to requirements at Real Madrid.

I could go on all day, as I believe we need another striker as well for next season, but I will stop for the moment and see who everyone else is suggesting.

  • If you had to select 1 player to ‘sell’ or ‘release’ this summer who would it be and why?
I would try and sell Mullins! I doubt that many people would come in for him though. What a waste of space he has been for us since January. A poor mans Davis if ever I saw one.

  • What are you hoping for from Pompey in the 2009/10 season?
A top 8 finish is what I think we should be capable of achieving, although with so many teams now looking like they could challenge for the Europa League next season any place between 5th and 15th might be very close.

  • How many Pompey games do you expect to make during that season?
Well this all depends. Being realistic I would like to do more than the number I did last season which turned out to be 8 I think. With finances tight however it could be a lean year for me. I might just have to head up the Vital match day features instead. Membership will be a certainty however so fingers crossed on a nice healthy pay rise please people.

Thanks to sneakay for answering these.
