Pompey reunion! We go to Stoke

A first Pompey win in the league cup since 2010, when we beat Peterborough on Tuesday night at Fratton, has earned us a crack at topflight outfit Stoke.

Stoke were one of the last sides we actually beat in this competition when we battered them 4-0 at Fratton one cold winter night, probably back in the winter of the 2009/10 season?

I do remember the game fairly well I just find it hard to sometimes remember the month and year as years of turmoil at Fratton has done that to me… I suspect many of us!

October seems to spring to mind?

Should they still be at the club, ‘rumours’ have linked most with moves away, and if they are even selected we could see something of a Pompey old boys reunion as Stoke have several of our former players in their squad, including Begovic, Wilson and Crouch of course…

The final week in August is when we will head to the Britannia Stadium, probably the last game we had at that ground was a 1-0 defeat in the same season as our league cup meeting?

I am thinking even later in the winter, well ‘proper winter’, when Kevin Prince Boateng missed a penalty – not the last one he would miss that season either! – before Ricardo Fuller scored the winner…

It is a game that we can win, and I reckon Andy Awford will be bang up for this as he targets his biggest ‘scalp’ as a manager to date, and if the players are too then why not!

Possible TV coverage for this one perhaps, although I think Man United going to MK Dons is a dead cert to be shown on one of the nights but it seems sky sports now keep Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights free for coverage these days so you never know…
