Pompey interested in Stalteri?

Reports in today’s Daily Mail are saying that we are interested in signing Spurs full back Paul Stalteri on loan.

I believe that the Canadian can play either as a left or right back, which could make him a possible addition at left back but with both full back areas pretty much well stocked to be honest I find this a bit of a strange link really?

I cannot see that there is any chance he is being signed to take over from Glen Johnson and it is also unlikely that he would dislodge Hermann Hreidarsson at left back – the only thing that I can think is that he is being signed as extra cover with the possibility that both Lauren and Djimi Traore might be sold this month?

Defence is not really an area we are short in, but if we did go out and bring in a defender surely a central defender would be more of a priority, and would be a more worthwhile signing to add cover for Sol Campbell and Sylvain Distin.

We were linked with Johan Djourou last summer before he went to on loan to Birmingham, but having now returned to Arsenal would he not be a better loan signing if we could get him and Arsene Wenger would let him go? Although he did play in their league cup side last night, and with Kolo Toure off to the African nations maybe they want to keep him for the second half of the season?

So, as you can see although I am not saying Stalteri is a bad player, I cannot quite see the benefits of signing him, particularly when other areas are more in need of attention…
