Yes, I know the league is ‘our priority’ as we want, in fact we NEED, to get out of league two but as much as the league cup wasn’t something many ‘worried’ too much about with the Paint Pot Trophy even less so – clearly Paul Cook didn’t care for it given his selection against Exeter! – I’ve still, and always will do, got a ‘soft spot’ for the FA cup.

This would be the case with or without our history with it!

I wanted us to do well in the league cup, I thought we were awesome against Derby and weren’t much off that against Reading, who just edged us out with the less said about the Paint Pot defeat the better…

Despite some not always showing it the respect it deserves, we’ve had manager’s guilty of this in the past – before and after winning it, it is still seen by many around the globe as ‘the greatest cup competition in the world’ so why wouldn’t you want to be in it?

This evening the draw for 1st round was made with Pompey now knowing who we would face, after all the qualifying round!

After this draw, made on BBC2 a short while ago, Pompey found out Macclesfield would be faced in the 1st round of the FA cup with the Blues at home in this tie.

The full 1st round draw was…

Burton Albion v Peterborough
Port Vale v Maidenhead United
Barnet v Blackpool
Bristol Rovers v Chesham
Cambridge United v Basingstoke Town
Mansfield Town v Oldham Athletic
Altrincham v Barnsley
Crewe v Eastleigh
Northwich/Chorley v Boreham Wood
Coventry City v Northampton Town
Brackley Town v Newport County
Grimsby Town v St Albans City
Hartlepool v Havant/Cheltenham
Salford City v Notts County
Dover v Stourbridge
Stevenage v Gillingham
Millwall v AFC Fylde
Aldershot v Bradford City
Walsall v Fleetwood
Bury v Wigan
Portsmouth v Macclesfield Town
Sheffield United v Worcester City
Barwell/Rushden v Grays/Welling
Halifax Town/Guiseley v Wycombe
Crawley v Luton
Doncaster v Stalybridge/North Ferriby
Didcot Town v Exeter City
Dagenham v Morecambe
Leyton Orient v Staines
Gainsborough v Shrewsbury
Maidstone v Yeovil
Braintree v Oxford United
Whitehawk v Tranmere/Lincoln
Accrington v York
Scunthorpe v Southend
AFC Wimbledon v Forest Green
Plymouth v Carlisle
FC United v Chesterfield
Rochdale v Swindon
Wealdstone v Colchester

These games will be played across the weekend beginning Friday 6th November.

So, are you happy with the tie we’ve been given and are you confident on the chances of making it into the 2nd round? Do you even want this!

As much as going up is the main thing for us I cannot see why we shouldn’t be able to look at an FA cup run as a place in the 3rd round against ‘one of the big boys’ could bring us a TV slot with a very hefty pay day – remember we’re league two these days and not topflight so eyes will be on the ‘fallen giant’ if we can get a Manyoo, Liverpool, Arsenal etc. and that brings the TV cameras and a hefty payday…
