ACADEMY LOSE TO COVENTRY

It rained goals once again at the Wellington Sports Ground but Pompey Academy finished with nothing to show for their efforts.

Ryan Gazet du Chattelier had twice given the Blues the lead but Coventry showed plenty of spirit to draw level, before netting a late winner.

Pompey took the lead after just five minutes when Andre Blackman`s long ball found the head of Callum Reynolds. His effort came back off the crossbar, giving DU CHATTELIER the simple task of heading home the loose ball.

It was a lead the lasted just three minutes, however. After Blackman’s back-pass was nervously dealt with by Liam O’Brien, the ball eventually found its way to Shaun Jeffers and the Coventry striker finished neatly.

But Pompey’s advantage was restored on 16 minutes after Marlon Pack had been brought down on the edge of the area by Sean Fraser.

Pack took the free-kick himself and the ball squirmed through the body of Coventry keeper Michael Quirke, leaving another simple finish for the well-placed DU CHATTELIER.

The visitors looked to have levelled the scores with a fine goal when Robert Ogleby found the net after some splendid play by Ashley Cain and Jeffers.

There was then a lengthy delay while striker Callum Wilson was stretchered off, following a late – but not malicious – challenge by Blackman.

The resulting free-kick was hammered into the wall, striking the hand of Pack. Referee Graham Matthews pointed to the spot and Cain stepped up to confidently fire home the penalty.

Half Time: Pompey 2 Coventry 2

After two months out injured, Paris Cowan-Hall replaced du Chattelier on 63 minutes and immediately injected more urgency into Pompey’s performance.

The Blues twice went close to retaking the lead. First Cowan-Hall’s shot was tipped over the bar by Quirke, before the keeper saved with his feet to deny Gael N’Lundulu.

Coventry were also causing Pompey some problems at the back and with the clock ticking down, both sides looked capable of grabbing the winner.

But it was the visitors who claimed all three points when, with just 10 minutes remaining, Cain caught Perry Ryan in possession and fired the ball past O’Brien.
