Seventeen games with only Wolves appearing twice. The thrashing of Leicester in front of the SKY TV cameras last season stands out; some famous goal scorers there including Ike Clarke, Ron Saunders, Dave Kemp and Mick Quinn. There is also the winner over Everton in 1955 scored by Vital Pompey friend Pat Neil.

Overall the record stands played 17 won 8 drawn 4 lost 5 goals for 25 against 16 – all in all not a bad day in fact apart from the Millwall defeat in 1966 there is a spell of 1938 to 1994 without a loss.

Another feature, again courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, sees us look at those Pompey personalities – past or present – who have a birthday on this day…

24/9/1980: Petri Pasanen
24/9/1974: Mathias Svensson
24/9/1957: Steve Foster
