Another feature, again courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, sees us look at those Pompey personalities – past or present – who have a birthday on this day.

20/11/1899: George Cooke
20/11/1947: Peter Mellor

From the Ed

Happy birthday to George Cooke and Peter Mellor – the Pompey players from the Blues’ past born on this day.

Cooke is not only a name not known to me but also well before my time with Mellor one I know of by name alone, I didn’t see him as a player for Pompey.

Now onto the games previously played.

Played – 15
Won – 5
Drawn – 3
Lost – 7

Again I recall a good few of the games but not sure if I’ve been to a game or not? I think Leyton Orient at Fratton Park in 2012 was a defeat I went too but not entirely sure?

What are your memories of Cooke – obviously too soon for anyone – and/or Mellor from their Pompey days? Also have you taken in any of the games previously played today – if so what are the memories from them too?

  • 12,10,04,99,85&82…plenty of games for me inc 2 aways, 12 was poor,10 I went to tick Oakwell off my list, poor again,04 another loss..99 yet another loss,85 went to WHL for the famous cup game v Spurs & finally got a win in 82( which was famous for the minutes silence for Jimmy Dickinson…saw Mellor, he was such a character & helped us up in 80

  • Went to Spurs in 1985 for the first of the 3 great cup games.
There for defeat to Crewe in 1999.
Missed the prem game in 2004 as my best mate got married & as best man it included being there & not at Fratton Park. Only home game I missed in the 7 seasons in the top flight.
Can’t remember 2012 but I did recall the horror of tv watching the cup defeat to Aldershot!
