For a number of days now we had known that Greg Halford had signed, but were not told anything officially…

Steve Cotterill also told The News this morning that Halford would feature in our opening pre-season friendly again Havant tonight.

Yet still, nothing official…

Although late this afternoon finally The Pompey Site confirmed his return to Pompey as a permanent signing from Wolves, after his successful loan spell last season.

A 3-year contract has been signed with him coming in for an undisclosed amount – ‘word on the street’ has it that this was £800,000 rising to £1m plus.

It will be interesting to see where he plays this season, will he be used as a fullback – his primary position – or will Cotterill continue to play him in a central role?

To be honest, as much as he grew into the role, I am not entirely convinced that his long-term future is as a central defender as I think he gets caught ‘too square on’ too many times to be a central player…
