Nugent and Adams on his departure

Tony Adams has spoken of his surprise to be sacked as Pompey boss only 16 league games, and 22 games in total into his 2-and-a-half-year contract.

Maybe ‘surprise’ is the wrong choice of words as in all honesty I have been wondering when this moment would come for some time, maybe surprise that it came today after the weekends showing – but enough of what I think as I have said enough already, lets just view what Adams said: ‘I am a little bit surprised, but results haven’t been good.

‘I haven’t had a lot of time and I certainly haven’t had the financial backing. We’ve had a few injuries as well and that’s tough to take.

‘It’s not turned me off management that’s for sure.

‘I’ve just got to make sure I get all the parameters right before I walk into the next one.

‘I can’t wait to get back in and have another bash. But I won’t be impulsive, I’ve got to learn from that and make sure I get things right.’

As said previously I wish him the best of luck – and also find it hard to disagree with much of what he said. I think I have said pretty much all I need/want to on his departure though to be honest…

One player that Adams has revitalised during his tenure is Dave Nugent.

He took a player that had seen his confidence shattered by Sandra’s husband, and gave him a chance and he has come good for us, or is coming good. What it is? 3 goals in 4 games, 3 in the last 3 league outings! Nugent, talking to sky sports news, has said that he was also shocked that he was sacked: ‘it was a bit of a shock getting up this morning and seeing the news.

‘He’s been in today wishing us all the best of luck for the rest of the season. Whoever comes in now has got a bit of a job on their hands. We’ll see who comes in next.

‘He called me aside saying ‘You’ve done well in the past few games, keep it going and hopefully I’ll work with you again in the future’. That was about it really.

I’ was (surprised at Adams’ exit). He’s given me a chance to play. I was happy for him to stay. I would have thought he would have been given a few more games, but it’s the chairman’s decision.’

The inform striker was asked about relegation, and rightly agreed that we are in a relegation battle: ‘yeah, definitely, there are a few teams in there.

‘There are about 11 teams that could go down at the moment. We’ve got to get a bit of stability at the club, win a few games and get out of there. ‘

I just hope that whoever does come in, and who that will be at this point in time is looking difficult to know, will carry on giving Nugent the chance to shine – it is pretty obvious that he is up for the challenge, and for me is one of several that are going to be the key to our survival…
