No breaking the bank… Not even for RJR

Fears had been raised that the budget could be broken, and thoughts were expressed that this could happen to accommodate another return to Pompey for Rocha John Rocha.

This will not be the case, it has been confirmed by Guy Whittingham on The Pompey Site that a deal could not be agreed: ‘it would have been fantastic to have added Ricardo to our squad for the new season.

‘Myself, the chairman and chief executive have held a series of talks with him over recent months. Unfortunately we were unable to finalise a deal, but we wish him all the best for the future.

‘Ricardo has served Pompey well over the past few years and it was clear from meeting with him that he still holds a lot of affection for this club.’

A number of discussions were held with RJR over the weeks to try and get him back but financial terms could not be agreed so this could not happen.

I must say that I am glad that we have not broke the budget excessively to bring him back, even though RJR would have definitely added plenty on and off the pitch and is among one of my favourite Pompey players, easily in recent history.

Vital Pompey ran a poll on this very – bank breaking – issue, these were the results…

What the poll asked – Should we ‘break the budget’ for Rocha (or anyone)?

How you voted – Nope, its vital we KEEP to a budget 77%
Yep, speculate to accumulate 23%

The very best of luck to RJR, I suspect that he may now retire but he leaves us with plenty of fond memories and I wish him well with whatever he does next…

Sam Sodje has made it clear he would be interested in coming back to play for us again.

Well, if he has not fixed himself up with a club, still wants this and is within the budget then maybe we could have a word with him again?
