Mendes staying with Pompey… probably…

Image for Mendes staying with Pompey… probably…

With Sulley Muntari’s move to Inter appearing a mere formality now, with Harry Redknapp now commenting on the matter when speaking in The Daily Record, a possible move to Rangers for Pedro Mendes ‘should’ be off: ‘I did speak to Walter about a couple of players and he said he liked Mendes.

‘I think his wages might have been an issue for Rangers, but the biggest problem is that with Muntari going I will need Pedro in my team.

‘He played his way back into our side for the FA Cup final – he’s a terrific player and a really good lad – and now Muntari is leaving I need him to stay.

‘Pedro is not a player I want to lose.

‘Because of the Muntari deal I don’t need to sell anyone else so it would take a big offer for me to consider letting Pedro go.’

So we will probably sell him next week then…

Mendes does not have the muscle that Muntari does but has great quality. And can we really afford to lose a player of his quality? Even more so now… and most certainly not for anything around £2m, what sort of offer is that for a player of his ability, 29 or not!

We will just have to see what happens, I would hope that we have plans up our sleeves with the Muntari sell – which I am sure we do, but we cannot afford to lose that many more quality players in midfield, as to be honest despite having fairly large amounts of them the quality is not there with all of them… I do not think that we should forget Arnold Mvuemba though, there is a fair chance that he could look to stake a claim this season? And he is not a shabby player is he!

There was plenty of Shaun Wright-Phillips talk going on late yesterday evening, and this is carrying on again today – but again with this issue we will just have to wait and see…
