Massive month for Pompey

We are now at the end of what has been a draining week, both mentally and physically – one that I will not be sad to see the back of I must admit!

Today brings the start of a new month – football wise – and this month could potentially be one that makes or breaks our season, even at this early stage.

I have been impressed with the start that Tony Adams has made and how the players have reacted to him – some better than others, so perhaps his motivational skills are even better with some than his predecessors were… This good start must culminate in a win over Wigan at Fratton today though, and I am sure that we will get it – in fact, not that I am expecting it, I would not be surprised to see us spank them!

Obviously this month starts with Wigan, then we go to Sunderland and West Ham, next up we have a couple of home games as we face Hull and Blackburn. On paper, and of course nothing is won on paper, we are more than capable of picking up 15pts out of 15 here, if we did not at least break double figures I would be disappointed. A good return not only keeps a healthy league position it also opens a bigger gap on the bottom 3!

In-between Hull and Blackburn we face Milan in the uefa cup – quite what to expect I do not know at the moment, I reckon a lot will depend on our form going into that game… If we could get a result against Milan, the likelihood of us continuing our uefa cup progress into next year increases – again another good thing, even if it does stretch the squad.

A good return from this month ‘should’ not only all but eliminate any lingering relegation fears, but will also send us into December – again a month that potentially promises a good return on points, which could send us into the New Year on a high and in a healthy position, and a position that should convince players that leaving Fratton for most other clubs is a backwards, at best sideways move – we just have to hope that financial constraints do not mean that our squad is totally dismantled out of necessity. Adams has said that if players are sold without his say he will walk, lets hope this means he has been assured things are not as bad as some might have you believe? Whilst he, and we, hope that none go realistically at least one prized asset is likely to move on – but I think we expected that regardless.

We must do all we can between now and then to support the club – getting behind the team like we can will see the players react, and that will see the results achieved. Also, even though it is not cheap, turning out in force to sell out Fratton will help generate extra revenue, which all helps!

Yep, we have to take each game as it comes but Wigan starts a run of games that could not only be crucial for the rest of this season but future seasons as well. Come on Pompey, let’s do this…

==========

Also, and an other little note on this subject really – Joe Jordan will also have his future resolved this week, and I believe that keeping him on the coaching staff – which I hope we do – will also be a huge help to the weeks, months and years that lie ahead. So fingers crossed this happens too!
