Maintaining Momentum is Crucial

An article from Pompey Malta, looking at what is so crucial ‘if’ an unlikely survival is to happen. We MUST keep some momentum going – read on for more.

When Marko Futacs sealed an impressive victory against Birmingham with his last minute goal to give us an unlikely victory and the much needed 3 points, the great escape had begun. Or so we hoped/thought!

However, a disastrous performance away to Coventry put us all down again, only for Appy’s side to put in a magnificent showing to re-ignite hope at Fratton Park against Hull. That result couldn’t be followed by another good one, and Portsmouth subsequently got thumped by Burnley.

At St. Mary’s, Norris’ goal gives us hope, yet again. But what is more important than the 3 points, is our team’s overall performance against high-flying Scummers. If Portsmouth could manage to hold the Scummers in such a manner, why cannot we put in a run of decent results to stay away from the dire obscurity of League 1 football, with all due respect? This has been our problem of late.

Michael Appleton’s side simply cannot put in a good run of results, and these latter stages of this season are beginning to be like a yo-yo game which is pouring frustration at times, unless we maintain some ground. With 5 games to go for, it is now time to go on an unbeaten run, or something close to it.

Pompey’s next game against Millwall at home could set us running, only if we are able to sneak a much-possible win. Then, Doncaster, a game we surely can win albeit away from home. If we show up like we did at St. Mary’s, we could grab all points. After Donny, 2 important but tough games at home against Palace and Derby. From these games, if we manage 2 to 3 points, we’ll be doing ourselves a good favour. That brings us to the last game: Nottingham Forest away. A game we can take by all means. What about beating Cotts and send them down instead of us? That would be the greatest of escapes! But we must maintain momentum soon, before this season slips through our cold hands.
