Left back in the dressing room…

An old classic that one eh?

The ‘where do you play’ question. You give the answer ‘left back’ and you would get back some witty ‘yeah, left back in the dressing room’ answer…

More seriously though we once again have a left back dilemma!

Dan Butler started the season at left back but a couple of disappointing games and some errors that resulted in goals meant Guy Whittingham looked elsewhere for an alternative option.

This saw Marcos Painter signed.

He certainly ‘brightened’ things up and impressed in his debut against Morecambe, I was not at Mansfield at the weekend so do not know how he did?

What I, and we all, now know is that his injury that forced him off will now keep him out for at least a couple of weeks…

Yep, it is a blow and it is disappointing but what can you do!

I say lets not be glass half empty, lets be more glass half full and look for the positives about this.

It opens the door to someone, who you would hope will be eager to come in and lay down a marker to Painter and say to Whittingham ‘I want to keep this place even when Painter is fit!’

Chesterfield will be a tough opponent this weekend, and we will need to be defensively sound, but it surely represents a perfect opportunity to bring Butler back into the fold?

Recalling him would install some confidence into him and with good home support it can only help him, whereas overlooking him in favour of someone else that is not recognised as a left back could do more harm than good…

There is continued talk of Shaun Cooper coming back with a contract maybe being signed this week?

If he does in time for the weekend he would not be match fit or match ready and him picking up an injury could well be possible as a result!

Also you have the added thoughts that Butler could have an even greater confidence dent that Whittingham has looked to bring in not one, but two other players instead of using him.

Talking of players and contracts Bondz N’Gala is someone that Whittingham has said he hopes to secure to a new deal, with his existing deal expiring soon.

What do you reckon guys, on the left back, Cooper and N’Gala issues?
