Kanu to be wrapped in cotton wool…

…maybe this is to keep him warm?

Harry Redknapp has spoken to The News to confirm that his golden boy Kanu will be wrapped in cotton wool for the next couple of weeks so he can once again lead the line on his own against United – something which he clearly does with great effectiveness…

‘After the Preston match, I think we’ve got to work hard this week on the training ground so that everybody understands their role in that system.

‘There are a couple of new players coming in and I’m going to have to be careful with Kanu in the league.

‘If I lose him we’re going to be short. He might be one I will have to wrap in cotton wool for the next week or two and wait for the Cup.

‘I’ve got Baros and Defoe to come back for the league games, so I might have to be careful with Kanu – I can’t really afford to lose him as well.

‘He did well against Preston – he can hold it up for you, he’s got a good touch. The problem is getting behind people, we’ve got no pace, that’s the problem.

‘Kanu can hold it up on his own but you need people to run beyond him. You are looking for runners really’.

Sorry, it might appear that I am anti Kanu – which I am not at all – but the fella just cannot play the lone roll, he cannot move and although his hold up play is second to none he is unable to then get into he box when some fantastic balls are played in as a result.

Granted we do need the runners from midfield so they need to do there bit but people like Sulley Muntari, Lassana Diarra, Sean Davis and most definitely John Utaka are no slouches are they, so we should have the pace that Redknapp claims we are lacking?

The implication is that Kanu is the only striker that we have for use in the cup! I thought that we signed a Czech striker by the name of Milan Baros a few weeks back, and also have a fella called Dave Nugent who is very close to full fitness… Not forgetting a certain Utaka could be used as a striker if needed?

The suggestion is that Baros is struggling for form and fitness, but he will only improve both by playing, Nugent was very close to making the bench at the weekend so he cannot be too far off, even if people do not rate him, and again – not trying to be anti Kanu – he is hardly setting the world alight with his form is he…

All in all I just think that it is basically a load of rubbish that has been said to be honest – is it some sort of ploy to loll United into a false sense of security? Even so Sir Alex Ferguson has been around too long to fall for this…
