Kanu set for Pompey return?

Kanu is now fit for selection and Harry Redknapp is considering resorting him to the starting 11 for the game with Everton this weekend, most likely going back to 2 men up top as he told The News: ‘Kanu’s training and playing at the moment and should be okay for Saturday.

‘Last week was just a little bit early for him, he was about 70 per cent fit at that stage.

‘He played up front with Benji the last time he was fit and I would consider it again against Everton.

‘We scored seven goals at home playing one up front against Reading but didn’t score any against Man City the other week playing two. But I don’t think it’s necessarily about systems.

‘It’s about players and Kanu is quality. He has done a fantastic job for us since I brought him here, he really has.

Kanu always appears to be at the 70 per cent stage though doesn’t he…

I do like Kanu and he does have that something that most others do not, and while I think I would go back to a 4-4-2 this weekend as we did against City the other week I would prefer to see Dave Nugent start alongside Benjani and leave Kanu on the bench and bring him on later, if needed.

My own thinking since he decided to stay has been that Kanu would probably be used best as an impact player from the bench, this along with the showing Nugent put in last time he played has earned him a start in my own opinion.

The 4-5-1/4-3-3 is working fantastically well away from home but this is not having the same impact at Fortress Fratton, as more often than not team are not allowing us to utilise this with quick breaks, as they are putting men behind the ball patiently waiting and settling for a point. A 4-4-2 does give us more options attacking wise, so I do expect to see this again this weekend – but who would be left out?

Either way Redknapp does have a few selection posers ahead of him again this weekend, which is not a bad thing at all…
