Grant on league cup exit

With players missing for Pompey, for various reasons, Avram Grant felt that it was always going to be a tough ask against Villa – who he said are a ‘good side’, which I would say is putting it mildly – but he felt the players, who have not had a lot of football recently, kept ‘fighting’, which pleased him.

Following this exit the league, until the FA cup anyway, becomes the priority and he feels that the squad ‘without injuries’ is good enough to get us to where we want to be – safety. Although he still hopes to be able to improve in the New Year.

See Grant’s views on the above, and more, in this sky sports video below…

Players ‘giving their best’ was all that he could ask for and felt he got – quite clearly, that was not good enough and in all honesty this performance has not done a great deal to raise my optimism levels I must admit!

For me, I would not say that many of those that came into the side have actually done much to give Grant too many selection headaches for the weekend, and – without being harsh – I can only hope that some of these do not have to play against Burnley…

Defensively we were absolutely shocking, what has happened?

Whilst we were not watertight by any means under Paul Hart at least we seemed to have some shape and organisation about us but we have now shipped 8 goals in 2 games under Grant – so he seriously needs to be looking at this at the weekend.

I guess, that said ‘if’ we can adopt a ‘we will score more goals than you approach’, that worked – not that I am sure we can – I would not care how many we shipped!
