With Pompey recently completing the signing of Jason Pearce from Bournemouth we have got a ‘fans-eye-view’ from a Cherries fan.
The ed on Vital Bournemouth, DJ, has kindly answered a few questions for us in an attempt to give us a better insight into Pearce.
Without further ado this is what was asked and what was said…
Were you disappointed that Jason Pearce left Bournemouth for a return to Pompey?
Obviously it’s disappointing to lose your captain!
He had been with us for four years, he had hardly missed a game, had played on through injuries, became the youngest captain in our history to win promotion and has won the player of the season award twice. He was the linchpin of our team over a very memorable period of time and his departure will leave a big gap which is difficult to replace.
Any idea why he was allowed to leave – was it because he wanted to move on, the board wanted the money or is was just the right move, for the right money at the right time?
Well the reason why he was allowed to join you for “£300k” was due to the sell-on clause, for us to receive that sort of money from any other club they would have had to offer £600k. So it certainly wasn’t the right money as you’ve got a bargain, but it was a decent offer under the circumstances for us.
The other argument would have been to keep him for another two years and lose him at the end of his contract for nothing, but he has given everything to this club during the period he was here, so it’s hard to begrudge him his chance of stepping up to the Championship, he deserves it, its just a shame it wasn’t with us.
What are the strongest areas and qualities of his game?
He will never give anything less than 100%. He will run through brick walls for the cause, play through injuries and will always battle hard, he earned the nickname “The Terminator” amongst the fans at Dean Court.
And the things that he is not so good at, or what let him down?
Occasionally he can lose his concentration, but he’s young and always improving.
If you were to hazard a guess, not that I suspect you really care that much, but what would it be that you think made him want to return to Pompey?
Pearce is focussed and ambitious and he wanted to make the step up to the Championship, being able to move to a club that can offer him that, can pay more in wages and he doesn’t need to move house, it’s a fairly easy decision to make.
So, all in all have we made a good or bad signing here with Pearce?
You have certainly bought a player who is worth more than you’ve paid. He’s a fantastic centre half who is more than capable of playing at a higher level, I have absolutely no knowledge of your team to predict if he will walk straight into the starting line-up, but I would imagine he will only get better over the next few years and he will be a solid Championship defender in the future.
Whilst we are talking what do you think would be the right hopes, or expectations, for both Bournemouth and Pompey this season?
Again no idea as its far to early to see what kind of squads we will both have come August.
Portsmouth have new owners who I’d imagine will want to prove they have the money and ambition to take Portsmouth back to the Premier League in the near future.
Bournemouth unfortunately look likely to be going through a transition period after losing Eddie Howe and missing out on promotion last season. Bradbury will want to build his own team, while members of the squad look like they want to make the most of their current stock and earn moves to either the Championship or to clubs who can offer big wages, we could unfortunately lose a couple more from last seasons squad, it’s going to be a busy summer for Bradders.
But I’d probably bet that this time next year both clubs will still be in the same divisions.
