Fabregas deal set to make matters worse

Dave_S139 returns with some thoughts on the knock-on Cesc Fabregas’, inevitable, move to Barcelona will have on football again.

Cesc Fabregas appears to have made his mind up and so too have Barcelona. It therefore simply remains for Arsenal to be slowly persuaded to part with one of their prized assets. Arsenal have rarely spent big to bring players into the club and even on the odd occasion that they have felt the need to splash the cash it has invariably realised a good return from the on sale. It’s therefore a bit of an irony that Arsenal could be the latest club to metaphorically inflate football’s financial balloon still further.

At a time when Portsmouth Football Club’s much publicised financial demise could and should have seen a monetary correction in our game we have an impatient player (who only recently has signed a longish contract with his club) that has decided, probably with the gentle prodding from his agent, to spark a transfer battle that could send the market prices climbing once again.

Barcelona have offered around £30M – it’s understood that they would probably go to £80M. Arsenal have obviously rejected the initial approach from Barca but surely it is only a matter of time before the clubs Director’s (forget the Manager’s) thrash out a price that is deemed acceptable to both clubs and certainly one player and one agent. Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal fans will be the losers and in truth so could the rest of football because this can only have an inflationary impact on our game.

Fabregas will become the latest financial benchmark against which other clubs assess the value of their player’s. The bright spot, because it is Arsenal rather than some other clubs involved, is that it is highly unlikely that the income from the transfer will be ploughed back in total to squad improvement. After all, they still have a massive debt on the ground to repay and surely at least some will be re-directed in this way. Hopefully, this will help prevent too much cash floating around in the transfer market.

Let’s hope that any damage is limited because there is no doubt that it ripples right the way down through the game to non-league level. And it would be a shame if the balloon that has been deflated even if only a little by both Pompey and Crystal Palace is almost immediately blown up again as the game continues to plough on regardless until the next bankruptcy.

Maybe one day it will be one of the big boys and football will actually do something about it.
