Well, Michael Doyle hasn’t been sent to Coventry, the Pompey captain is returning to his former club on his own free will.

The News this afternoon reports Doyle has made up his own mind about his future, opting to re-join Coventry, where the (soon to be former) Pompey captain enjoyed a successful spell prior to his move Sheffield United before joining the Blues two years ago.

Doyle, 35, is a player Paul Cook wanted to retain but the midlands based midfielder, bringing an end to his commuting and allowing him to settle with his family, will stay in league two at the Ricoh Arena.

I cannot lie, I wasn’t expecting this to happen to be honest as Doyle was a player I expected to stay for another year at least, not that I thought he would be the ever present he had been during his two years at Fratton Park so far.

Pompey, it would seem, are none for two so far when it comes to the out of contract players as Enda Stevens is also on his way, he’ll be joining Sheffield United on a free this summer.

These contractual issues REALLY need to be resolved, and quickly, as a good few of the would-be free agents aren’t going to go without offers for too long, as is the case (assuming it’s officially confirmed) with Doyle and Stevens.
