Jermain Defoe has been grabbling the plaudits since he arrived, and rightfully so. His 2 goals against Birmingham during the week took him onto 5 in 5 games since his arrival from Spurs.

Having only been given a late call-up into Fabio Capello’s 1st England squad he is a near certainty to be in his next, and Sol Campbell has given his club teammate his full backing when speaking to the Daily Star, and has urged him to take this chance should it come along: ‘Jermain has got a good chance to stake a claim.

‘He’s come down here, he’s playing and he’s scoring. Now he has to grab his opportunity.

‘He doesn’t necessarily have to be selfish, but he has to stake a claim for England because he has the chance now.

‘He just has to believe he can really make a difference.

‘He is very sharp. He makes good runs, scores with both feet and he’s quick. Now he has to believe’.

I have been impressed with Defoe since he arrived, he is often accused of ‘being lazy’, which to be honest if he was scoring 20 goals a season you could deal with really, but I have not seen a lazy player at all since he signed?

His attitude appears to be spot on too, he gave up a possible league cup winners medal to come here, and ‘might’ also miss out on an FA cup winners medal, but this has not stopped him from fully supporting the cup cause even if he cannot be a part of it, as it was said by Harry Redknapp that Defoe was the first person to text him after we beat United voicing his delight at the win.

I maintain my belief that as far as a goalscoring striker goes there is not a better striker than Defoe playing in the top flight, again as I keep saying this is not to say I think that as an all-round player he is the best striker, just the best in terms of a goalscorer.
