Davis struggling to be fit for Villa

Having missed the draw with Everton last weekend Sean Davis is looking doubtful again for this weekends visit to Villa – which will be a blow, probably more so than many would have thought just a few months ago…

Davis has a ‘minor hamstring tear’ which is said to have responded well to treatment, but the overall opinion is that he will do well to recover in time to feature against Villa.

I think we really missed him against Everton, and it showed. He has been offering fantastic cover to the back four, but is also bombing forward at every given moment and although it might not have made any difference my thinking is that had he been able to get forward as he has been, maybe he could have made the difference in that game?

But, as they say every cloud has a silver lining. Pedro Mendes would look like having another chance in his absence this weekend. But in all honesty he has not really taken the chances that he has been given so far, which surprises me as I think he is a fantastic footballer, but at the same time players need a run of games to get a rhythm more often than not. Mendes did look more impressive against Everton than he had previously this season though.

To be honest – but this could then leave us exposed? – I would be tempted to play Papa Bouba Diop in more of a holding role, his mobility could then see him get up and down the pitch better than Mendes can, so his threat could then be better utilised further up the pitch – but then again this is what Harry Redknapp is paid for, so whatever he decides will be the best thing…
