Coles back with Pompey

Players, managers, coaches etc. come and go.

Some are missed more than others, some also return down the line and David Coles has become one of those to do so in both cases.

When Avram Grant left for West Ham back in 2010 unfortunately Coles was one of a number of our then coaching set-up that went with him…

I do not know Coles personally but know people that do and they speak very highly of him, so I am delighted by this news.

I also think that David James previously said that he was the ‘best coach he had ever worked with‘, and that is very high praise from the greatest goalie we have ever had at the club.

Having spent time working in Dubai after leaving West Ham he is now back in the country and contacted Guy Whittingham to see if he could help the club at all.

Since Alan Knight moved on Phil Smith has combined his player role with being the goalkeeping coach but Coles will now take up the position.

How long this ‘open ended’ arrangement will last is not known but forever how long it lasts this cannot be a bad thing for us.

I would suspect that Smith will leave in the summer (unless he eventually becomes the fulltime goalkeeping coach?) but we still have John Sullivan under contract for another season after this and ‘could’ of course have Trevor Carson permanently come January?

The goalies that we do have will learn plenty from Coles, they will not find many better to learn from no matter how long they play so they should make the most of it and this will improve them and us.

If he knows anything about defences any help he can give there would also help…
