Chaplin commits!

Conor Chaplin, assuming he sees out this contract – as I suspect he will, will remain ‘one of our own’ until the summer of 2018 at least with his signing a new contract!

It’s been spoken about, by both Paul Cook and Chaplin himself, for the past week or so and now we know without a shadow of a doubt this is a done deal as his new 3-year deal was confirmed on portsmouthfc.co.uk today.

Awesome news and a great way to kick off the week!

Having scored 4-goals already this season, you tend to feel – fitness permitting and the chances coming his way – he’ll get anywhere between 10-20 at least, not putting on too much pressure mind…

On this new deal he said:

‘I’m delighted to have extended my contract – it’s probably the best thing that has happened to me.

‘I’ve never made any secret of the fact that I want to play my football with Pompey and it means everything to know I will be here for another three years.’

Confidence, you tend to see this in him, isn’t something he lacks.

There’s a fine line between confidence and arrogance but fortunately, and I’m sure he’s got the right people around him to make sure this remains the case, he’s staying the right side of this!

He’s still only 18, with it something we’ve got to remember, but the Pompey fan through and through always felt he would score goals if given a chance.

Chaplin’s admitted he wasn’t quite expecting his chance so soon though:

‘I was always confident of scoring goals at this level, but I just never quite expected it to happen so quickly.

‘Although I come from Worthing, I have been here since I was a small kid and know everything there is to know about the club.

‘When the fans sing ‘He’s one of our own’ about me, I get goosebumps, as I really am Pompey through and through.’

If you’re good enough you’re old enough as they saw eh!

Chaplin’s certainly good enough and all being well he’ll just get better and better as we, again hopefully, move forward – fingers crossed we’ve got no silly ‘release clause’ included on this deal…

I’m not sure if we’ve had an update on his injury, it was an injury that saw him come off at Oxford I’m guessing, but all being well this isn’t too bad and he’ll be back in contention soon enough.
