Blues not yet the finished article

Admittedly, Kenny Jackett inherited a good League Two winning side but this then had to be moulded and shaped into his Pompey team.

Quite clearly Jackett’s approach is – in the main – to use younger players who have the scope to grow and improve, which will take time and patience, not always something common in the modern game.

However, there’s still work to be done if Pompey are to ‘evolve’ as we’re still not the ‘finished article’ in Jackett’s eyes.

Jackett told BBC Radio Solent: ‘It’s building, we’re not the finished article. We’ve a few out injured. Teams always need to step up from the excellent League Two side that was here last season, it needed to evolve.’

The elusive back-to-back wins were finally secured on Saturday when MK Dons were seen off at Fratton Park – as players return from injury it’ll increase Jackett’s options but the boss is already targeting additions when the transfer window opens.

He added: ‘In a new division, you can see the pace and power is higher. We made sure we could get on top of a very good MK Dons side, but we need more. When January comes, we need to make sure we step forward and players remain hungry and competition is high.’
