Appy Says! Crewe reaction

Pompey made it 3 wins from 4 league one outings, with us unbeaten during this period, when we saw off Crewe on Saturday afternoon.

We were quick out of the blocks with Appy knowing that we did what we had to in each half: ‘in the first half against Crewe we were very good and on the front foot then in the second half we just had to be professional.

‘We had to make sure that we didn’t concede a goal and then just see the rest of the game out.’

Crewe are a decent side, but are they really a side that we had to sit back so much against in the 2nd half though?

Like we did at MK Dons the week before we sat back so much in the 2nd half, but fortunately unlike that game at The stadium:mk, we did not pay the price…

That approach, in all honesty, was more acceptable as the away side at such a talented side as MK Dons – not that I am being disrespectful to Crewe mind! – but I would have expected more as the home side and with a 2-goal lead, but hey ho!

Going ‘all out attack’ would have been crazy, but I do not think we should have dropped as deep as we were, had we not done this I am sure that we could have added a third and maybe gone on to get more, although a win is a win and that is what was the prerequisite before the game…

Appy, to be fair, has constantly said to us that October/November time would see this side properly gel and start to kick-on.

Whilst he admits that we have, despite this run, not been at our best he think we still can be soon and hopefully a little more ‘security’ can be afforded his players too, which would help: ‘I said from day one that it might take until November before you see the best of this team.

‘We’ve got a lot of work to do and they’re nowhere their best at the minute, but we’re picking up results.

‘Players aren’t stupid – they’re aware of the situation at the club. They need security. A lot of them have family in other parts of the country, but I can’t commit to anything longer than a month – it’s unsettling.

‘But the players are getting down to business. We lost three on the bounce a few weeks back, but have responded really well to that.’

10pts from the last 12pts on offer has helped us to 15pts in total; although we still have 10pts to be taken off so building on this with another win this weekend against Shrewsbury is pretty important!
