The agent for Fredi Kanoute – Christophe Mongai – has made claims in the News of the World that a move back to the Premiership could be on the cards for the Sevilla striker.

‘It’s true Newcastle are interested, but so are Portsmouth.

‘There’s no concrete offer yet, but Fredi is interested.’

Kanoute is a player that Harry Redknapp knows very well from his time with West Ham and is reported to have ‘caught the eye’ of Redknapp on a recent ‘spying mission’ in Spain – when the Pompey boss had gone to watch Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano.

The Mali international has scored more than 20 goals this season, helping the club to a second successive Uefa Cup win.

A major draw back is the fact that he could – although I am not aware of how well Mali are currently going in qualification – be another player that might head off for the African Nations early in 2008?

We all know what Kanoute is capable of – as we have seen him with West Ham and Spurs – and my thinking is he would be a younger version of Kanu but with – most importantly – a far greater goal threat and is much more athletic.

The £8million price tag puts me off slightly though, after all the fella is 29-years old, turning 30 in September. But is he better than what we currently have – I would not hesitate that much in actually saying yes he is.
