We have had little ‘dribs and drabs’ thus far although the real ‘influx’ of players that people have been hoping, dare I say it if not expecting, at PFC has not materialised really has it?
And we do need it to!
Jason Pearce and Chuck are good signings, very good in fact and both add something not only to the squad but most definitely the starting 11, but they are nowhere near enough…
Yep, we have a number of weeks before the season kicks-off but pre-season training is now back and it is not long at all now until we play our first friendly, once this comes along others soon follow as does a return to America.
Whilst the travel chaos will not be the same this time as it was last summer the limited numbers is very much a possibility as things stand, although in a little under ½ a months time when we fly stateside you would hope, if not assume, this would be different?!
I think we have, or at least should have, gone past the ‘if’ so and so comes in point, there is not ‘ifs’, ‘ands’ or ‘maybes’ about it, we need signings but we also need to get enough bodies in place ASAP!
If too much time passes we know that we will again be playing ‘catch-up’ and we cannot afford another season where our pre-season, and squad bonding, happens in the opening month or so of the season…
By no means is it time to ‘panic’ yet, and I have little doubts we are working hard to bring in players, but we really could do with a few signing this week!
There is only so long that can pass with limited movement, days soon turn into weeks and then the months fly by.
That said all it takes is a day, maybe a couple of days, where a couple arrive on each of these and the shift this brings is phenomenal.
We have a little over a month before our opening game of the season, ideally we could do with a couple of weeks before this for the majority of players that will arrive this season to be together, start bonding as a squad and playing as a team in pre-season.
So, this week and the early part of the next is where I really do think we need to be increasing the numbers to at least 15 or so, that will be here next season, that will be the core of the seasons squad. Topping this up with a few more signings, be that permanent or loanees before the end of August, to take us to around 18-20 would be where we need to be…
And I really hope this is what the next 7-10-days will finally bring?
By all accounts it is pretty much certain, almost nailed on, that Luke Varney will be a confirmed signing this week. I know we keep hearing its ‘nearly done’ but Monday is said to be 90% certain that this will be the case.
Keeper Stephen Henderson is also ‘said’ to be training with us this week so his signing looks likely?
As said we do not quite need to start panicking yet, although the next week and a ½ is a time period that really needs to start seeing the major core of the 2011/12 seasons squad take shape…
