Youthful Pompey hold firm

A very youthful Pompey side held Wigan goaless last night, joel Ward and Matt Ritchie got their Premiership bows, while Sowah joined in late on and Marlon Pack sat on the bench.
Jamie Ashdown kept another clean sheet with a couple of smart saves to show this is life after James if he departs.

Pompey were out to contain and counter, that was clear, the game itself was a stereotypical ‘bore-draw’, Wigan were nervy as they tried to secure safety, while Pompey were obviously understrength and taking the chance to blood a few for next term.

The match was hardly a classic with few chances, what efforts there were, were mainly off target, Paul Scharner not really endearing himself to the home fans, the lethargis attitude to the match stretched to the Wigan faithful who only just surpassed the 14,000 mark for the game.

On the night Matt Ritchie was the closest to a Pompey goal, one header was miscued, while another went narrowly wide after he outjumped Melchiot, a free-kick just before he was replaced went close also, though Kirkland was not troubled, still, a good sign that he wanted to take it!

Vanden Borre was his usual self after returning form his ban, while Marc Wilson could of been considered an old head in defence, all this after only really making the breakthrough himself this season!!
