The sooner Spurs complete the signing of Charlton’s Darren Bent the sooner we would know where we really did stand as far as signing Jermain Defoe is concerned.

When Bent looked like signing for West Ham last week any hopes that I had that Pompey might yet sign Defoe were all but extinguished. As we know, this deal fell through and with it this flame – despite flickering in the wind – remained lit.

Today’s Sun is claiming that Spurs ‘will listen to offers’ for Defoe if they sign Bent. It is pretty clear that Defoe will leave Spurs when – as this is more likely than ‘if’ – they complete the signing of Bent.

‘He’s lazy’ and ‘he’ll lose his England place if he plays for Pompey’, are a couple of things I have heard as to why Defoe should not or would not sign, but would he be more likely to keep an England place if he went to other ‘reported’ targets Villa, Everton or West Ham?

Everton maybe, but with the others my thinking would be nope – if he would even lose his place at all at any of these sides – Pompey included? And I am not totally sure he would anyway – so long as he kept playing regularly and kept on scoring, as I feel sure he would.

The ‘Redknapp factor’ alone is a big draw, but would this be enough to tempt him, or would Redknapp as always be left saying ‘I like him of course I do, I would love him at Pompey but I couldn’t get him’.

We paid £7million for Sulley Muntari, if we will pay something similar – maybe as much as £10million – we could get him if he would come here.

A lot of ‘ifs ands or buts’ in this hypothesis but the sooner Spurs complete their signing of Bent the sooner these can be proved right or wrong.

PLAY UP POMPEY!
