It has seemed like good news has been at a premium for Pompey for some time – we get the odd ‘snippet’ here and there, but more often than not this comes to nothing anyway.

Although, and for me this is good news – even though I am sure there will be a fair amount of negativity surrounding it, which is fair enough as we all have opinions – Marc Wilson has gained his first call-up for Ireland.

He has been named in the squad to face Brazil on March 2nd – and to be fair Giovanni Trapattoni has been around the block a few times so the Wilson cannot be all bad can he!

Yep Wilson has made mistakes, an yep he might not have always learned from them but he has been well and truly thrown in at the deep end this season and I think, assuming we do come through ok as a club and we do not look to offload him, he will gain from this. I am still not convinced he is a central defender though – I feel with his footballing ability and range of passing, which is good, he would be better suited as a defensive midfielder really.

For me, in a season full of lows, I would say the emergence of Wilson – even if it has been more out of necessity – has, overall, been one of the few high(ish) points to be honest…
