Derby have made a loan move for Tommy Smith, with Nigel Clough confirming that he would like to take the Pompey forward – who previously played for Derby – back to Pride Park on loan until the end of the season.

He says that they made an approach last week, and is still trying to get in touch with an agent and/or management at Pompey, although they have had no joy as of yet and with him returning to the side at the weekend – and scoring his 1st Pompey goal – not to mention the fact that he will most probably want to be involved in the FA cup semi final in some way Clough does not think the move will be successful?

The football leagues loan window closes this week, Thursday I think, so they have not got that much time to work in…

To be honest I would hope that Smith does not want to go anywhere, something I do not think he will, and would also hope – even though the money for a loan move, albeit a small amount, would most probably be welcomed – that we are not looking to offload him as I like the guy and can see the benefits of giving him a run in our side!

Smith is, for me, the most natural player that we have to fill in the right sided area if we persist with this 4-5-1, or 4-3-3, formation that we are going with – he would also be able to stay out wide in a 4-4-2 set-up if we changed formation mid-game…

I will be hoping that he goes nowhere before the end of the week – and can only hope that the club have the same thoughts, although I guess ‘time will tell’ what is going to happen.
