An article from Pompey Malta about Benjani – read on for more.
Steve Cotterill has been after a striker for a while now, and this could drag on and on and ultimately end up short of strikers come end August; typical Pompey! However, until then, Portsmouth have to rely on Kitson and Kanu, as their recognised strikers.
Danny Webber was expected to be fit and running this campaign, but to the surprise of many, he was released. Thus, we urgently need a striker who can do a job for the time being.
One name comes to my mind that fits the bill; Benjani.
The famous forward, who scored around 20 goals in his time at Portsmouth, is currently without a club and is training with non-league Stockport County (who?), will surely bite Cotterill’s hand if he had to offer him a contract, perhaps a short month contract, similar to Chris Dailly’s.
Despite losing his form in recent seasons, Benjani could be a great acquisition to a light squad, needing depth in attack. I am sure he is up to a new challenge, even if in a lower league than the Premiership.
If Benjani is on the verge of playing a competitive match for Stockport, then he is ready to play in the Championship. I urge Steve Cotterill to grab this unique opportunity and sign Benjani. Mwaruwari loves Portsmouth and has been a hit at Fratton Park.
So why not give him a run out and see how far it goes? There is no harm in having him around until we find another striker, and if he proves he is good enough, we can even keep him here.
