In typical Pompey fashion they offered us hope with one hand, with the amazing win over United and snatched it away with the other following defeat to Watford.

Although I believed 100% that we would beat United and Watford before the weekend started, as frustrated as I am now that is has finished and we have ‘only’ won one of the two after we rolled over against Watford today, I think that the vast majority would have settled for pretty much what we got from the Easter programme if they were honest?

Having worked so hard to overcome United at Fratton on Saturday, Monday lunchtime proved a bridge too far as a team of Watford players, playing with the freedom of nothing to lose and looking to impress to earn starting places against United in the cup semi next weekend humbled us 4-2.

The outcomes of next weekend’s cup matches will have a major bearing on the remainder of our season. A final involving Chelsea and United will make 7th at least good enough for Europe – I’ve previously made such claims but I’m almost 100% certain that these views would but correct this time no question about it! As Spurs are still involved in the UEFA Cup they will want to win that which could see their league form suffer. If they did win it would English football lose a place through the Premiership placing as a result or could we even gain another?

I hadn’t and still haven’t given up on our European hopes, despite today’s setback. Ask yourself this question, when you take into account what most of you would have honestly been expecting from this Easter schedule have we really lost as much ground as you would have been expecting?

We can’t be relying on others but this latest set back isn’t as bad as it could have been and despite our generally shocking form in 2007 which makes the likelihood of going on a run of victories less likely, until it is impossible I will retain my dream of seeing Pompey in European football next season.

The match with Everton will be the key match for us but three points against Newcastle next weekend and we are again right back in the race, if Chelsea and United win to meet in the cup final even more so.

PLAY UP POMPEY!
