Toast Special – Wembley Travel Arrangements

One of the Toast’s many contributors was travelling to work this morning when he heard a train announcement from South West Trains.

This announcement said that SWT would not be able to guarantee getting all fans to Wembley before Kick off!!

On further listening it became clear that extra coaches will be added to trains by both SWT and Southern but because of engineering works in the Clapham Junction area extra trains cannot be added and journey times will be longer – Portsmouth to Waterloo will take 2 hours. The early kick off time is partly to blame – thanks BBC. The train companies recommend that any fans intending to travel by train buy their tickets in advance and travel as early as possible. As a reminder SWT trains run to London Waterloo and Southern Trains to Victoria.

So what are the other options for travel? Coach either from the Supporters Club or via the dreaded Ticketmaster or even use National Express. Or you could use Park and Ride by driving to a railway station or tube station and take the train to either Wembley Park or Wembley Central.

There are many options and Pompey have done their homework. See www.portsmouthfc.co.uk and select ‘Wembley Travel Details’ for full information.

South West Trains on their website admit that ‘Police have warned us that extremely high numbers of fans are likely to attempt to travel to Wembley by train’. Toast thinks they might have worked it out for themselves!!

Two pieces of Toast advice

  • Plan you journey now!! Don’t leave it until the last minute. Getting there may be more difficult than getting a ticket and

  • Ignore the Pompey suggestion of Chiltern Trains unless you are travelling from that direction. The stations are a long drive from Portsmouth and their trains may be crowded with Baggies fans following the same advice. If you need to come that way use High Wycombe.

Whatever route you take, have a safe journey and enjoy the game.
