One of the Toast’s many contributors was travelling to work this morning when he heard a train announcement from South West Trains.

This announcement said that SWT would not be able to guarantee getting all fans to Wembley before Kick off!!

On further listening it became clear that extra coaches will be added to trains by both SWT and Southern but because of engineering works in the Clapham Junction area extra trains cannot be added and journey times will be longer – Portsmouth to Waterloo will take 2 hours. The early kick off time is partly to blame – thanks BBC. The train companies recommend that any fans intending to travel by train buy their tickets in advance and travel as early as possible. As a reminder SWT trains run to London Waterloo and Southern Trains to Victoria.

So what are the other options for travel? Coach either from the Supporters Club or via the dreaded Ticketmaster or even use National Express. Or you could use Park and Ride by driving to a railway station or tube station and take the train to either Wembley Park or Wembley Central.

There are many options and Pompey have done their homework. See and select ‘Wembley Travel Details’ for full information.

South West Trains on their website admit that ‘Police have warned us that extremely high numbers of fans are likely to attempt to travel to Wembley by train’. Toast thinks they might have worked it out for themselves!!

Two pieces of Toast advice

  • Plan you journey now!! Don’t leave it until the last minute. Getting there may be more difficult than getting a ticket and

  • Ignore the Pompey suggestion of Chiltern Trains unless you are travelling from that direction. The stations are a long drive from Portsmouth and their trains may be crowded with Baggies fans following the same advice. If you need to come that way use High Wycombe.

Whatever route you take, have a safe journey and enjoy the game.

    • this really is a worthwhile read fellas, it give you info that will help and also directs you elsewhere for more help… take notice of this and plan ahead, if you have not already?

    • If anyone is looking to park and ride i would highly recommend Uxbridge. Easy to get to just off the M25 by Heathrow, and it is at the end of the Bakerloo line which goes to Wembley (if I remember correctly).

    • sneakay you are right Uxbridge is at the end of the Bakerloo line and takes about 30 minutes on the tube. On average trains leave every 10 minutes. Good shout.

    • For those of you using SWT, I was told by the booking office at the local station yesterday that trains are being deiverted via Reading because of the Clapham Junction engineering!! Haslemere to Waterloo is estimated at 1hr 50, so Pompey to Waterloo is going to be longer than 2 hours

    • Why do they recommend buying tickets in advance? SWT don’t run “reserved seat” type trains and a full train is a full train, advanced ticket or not

    • I am being quoted 1hr 34 from Farnborough, which is on the Winchester and Basingstoke line. I imagine most the trains will come that way then go out past Virginia Water and Egham. It’s a good hour going to Pompey from Farnborough, so that put train times at over 2hr 30!

    • It will take you nearly as long to get there from Pompey, as it will take us to get from Liverpool and Birmingham!!
      How bad is that!!

    • SWT timetable for the day shows Fratton to Waterloo 2hr 3 mins for fast trains and 2hr 13 mins for semi fast services. Hence my 2 hours. First train is around 05:00 but check times and board at the Harbour if you can.

    • Tony I think the trains in your part of the world will go via Reading but the Portsmouth-Guildford-Waterloo will take a different route. Southern to Victoria is a better bet as not effected. Buy in advance to avoid long queues at the normally undermanned ticket offices!!

    • OK, I’m driving, I’ve booked a parking space actually at the stadium, any tips on routes etc guys, any appreciated. Apart from that, will just be following my Tom-Tom.

    • I heard a rumour that the Isle of Wight hovercraft and the Gosport Ferry are going to sail from Portsmouth harbour to Embankment on the thames to drop fans off so they can then get on the tube and make their way to Wembley. The train to victoria from pompey takes years.

    • Rabbi doubt the ferries story but you never know!! The Victoria train will take about he same time as the diverted Waterloo train and it is cheaper I am told if you buy a Pricebuster ticket at only £13.50 from any Portsmouth Station! You must ask for a Pricebuster ticket and travel on Southern Trains to and from Victoria.

    • The News headline tonight – Fans Warned ‘You may miss kick off’. Vital Pompey first – The News the next day!!

    • Whats this about men in uniform!! Its a bit like “The Stud”
Lets all go down the night before, that would ensure that we do not miss the kick off, in fact lets go on Thursday, but not fly into Heathrow!!
Not long to go now lads.
