We might have been due to lose George Thorne early in the New Year anyway but unfortunately we have lost him earlier than scheduled, so he misses the games against Millwall, Leicester and Watford.

Due to some injury problems at West Brom they have recalled him, although Joe Mattock will remain at Fratton.

The Pompey Site issued this statement, below, earlier this morning…

Thorne Recalled By West Brom
George Thorne has been recalled from his loan spell at Pompey by West Brom.

The Baggies have a number of injuries so are recalling the midfielder early, as well as two other players at Football League clubs. However, Joe Mattock will remain with the Blues.

Thorne had been due to go back to West Brom after Pompey’s Championship game with Watford on January 2.

The 18-year-old has been hugely impressive in four starts for Pompey in which Michael Appleton’s side have been unbeaten.

Portsmouth Football Club would like to thank West Brom for the loan and George for his efforts while at Fratton Park.

We wish him all the best back at The Hawthorns and hope that he might be back with us at some stage in the future.

I have been quite impressed with the guy to be honest so I am sorry to see him go back before the festive games, and ‘think’ we would have ‘probably’ extended his loan had injuries at his parent club not meant this was not possible.

Thorne has, for me, grown in stature in the games he has played thus far and for a player so young I have been impressed by how happy he is to almost take control of a game – he is always looking for the ball and looks more than comfortable on it.

For the senior players around him to be so willing to let him take this lead tells us a lot…

I am sure that when the transfer window opens again and West Brom are at the right stage to do this they will let him return for another loan spell.
