The Premier League? More like Premier Inn!

Some words from a newbie on Vital Pompey, frattonchorus. Well worth a read.

Pompey are in a mess. You know it, I know it. Even the people I swear never liked football seem to have an opinion on it! But all the while the fans, media and PFA are publicly condemning the reckless management of what still remains of the Pride of Hampshire, Richard Scudamore and the Premier League sit relieved in their offices planning when next to try and convince us that the best league in the world needs a 39th fixture.

Scudamore breathes a sigh of relief. He still can’t believe he got away with the Tevez saga. Sure, West Ham and Kia Joorabchian must take the lion’s share of the blame for fielding what was essentially an illegitimate player, but where was the Premier League’s best man when the paperwork was ratified? I mean isn’t the role of the Premier League to govern the competition? To ensure that all clubs and players compete in a ! fair and regulated environment?

Cue Thaksin Shinawatra (Sinatra to friends). His over-seas exploits brought pressure onto the PL to modernise and tighten it’s ‘fit and proper persons test’. This was to stop an influx of wannabe celebrities who had no money, crooked businessmen who know a good deal on weapons when they see one, and people who have no interest in the game. Bearing in mind that no fan could safely say that none of these apply to our last 3 incarnations of owner, I start to wonder what this test actually entailed? And for that matter, how far Robert Mugabe, Bin Laden and Kerry Katona would of got before being told, ‘we need more evidence of your intentions’.

But maybe us, the fans, are the problem? We’re of an ilk that still believes when someone says something they’ll do it. Like when we roar ‘Portsmouth till I die’, you look around and know that to be the case. Like our stadium, we are out of date, but in the same nostalgic way that doesn’t let modern football forget where it came from.

So whether we have to endure this crap for another few years, or we mark the foundations of the post-administration ‘Portsmouth Football Club’, know this: We DO play in a league run by donkeys. We WILL lose managers who claim this is their “spiritual home”. We’ll ALWAYS offer employment to the disillusioned that call themselves “doctor”, “prince” and “extremely wealthy Saudi Arabian”. But at least we are not SCUMMERS.
