Welcome to the unofficial Pompey news round-up – your quick and easy Pompey news reference guide covering the last seven days.

Please take the time to visit this page and take a moment to remember the 20th Anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. I’m sure you all remember this in various ways – I was only 3 so don’t remember the time myself but seeing the footage and reading the reports I can’t help but feel for those who lost someone during those terrible events. I can’t comprehend what it’s like, but at least read the article as a mark of respect.

Club News

Back to Fratton Park for the first of two Fratton visits on the trot as Portsmouth took on bottom side West Bromwich Albion. The score finished 2-2, with Pompey taking the lead through a fantastic Kaboul solo effort. Jonathan Greening equalised just after the second half, and West Bromwich Albion took the lead after a Chris Brunt free kick beat David James. Kranjcar levels almost immediately in front of the Fratton End with an even better free kick, which was skilfully placed.

Read PompeyGrant01’s match report here. Fantastic match report, in fact one of the best I’ve read to be honest as it takes you through the action pretty much minute-by-minute, leaving out absolutely nothing. Just a shame about the result! He’s also rated the players, so have a butchers and see if you agree.

Owenspompey provides his ratings, and you can see them here.

Check out the highlights on the official site, too.

No reserve or academy games this week, but Pompey’s female equivalents beat Charlton 4-3 away from home. Sounded like a thrilling match, and if you fancy reading the report then head to the official site.

Following on from last week’s accounts announcement, yet more Pompey woe as some tabloids accuse Portsmouth of calling in the tabs of Manchester City, Tottenham and Real Madrid in order to raise funds. Read about it here. In this article, Rug as if by some kind of magic correctly predicts that Pompey will issue a statement. Take a look at that statement here.

Check out the official site as well, because there’s a neat little video of the squad training on there. Quite funny, with some silky and some not-so-silky skills on display.

Also, check out the official site, and last issue of Pompey Chimes here for information about the end of season gala dinner.

Portsmouth’s biggest fan, John “Portsmouth Football Club” Westwood, has been silenced and nobody seems to know why. The likely culprits are the prawn sandwich brigade, as they aim to shut him for good for a bit of peace and quiet. Rug proposes a solution here.

Squad News

Lots of squad news with, rather surprisingly, a few titbits of transfer speculation thrown in. First though, check out Hart’s reaction to the West Brom game here. Also, check out the Pompey official site for squad reaction to the game. Niko Kranjcar tells PFC TV that we need to stick together to have a chance for survival, and Jermain Pennant looks on the bright side of the game by saying that a point is better than no points.

Also on the official site, Paul Hart tells us that Niko Kranjcar is really excelling in the free role he’s been given, and is now enjoying his football. Well worth a watch.

Are you nervous about the Bolton game? Scared we’re going to lose? Well don’t be! Reassure yourselves by going on the Official site, and checking out the videos from Sylvain Distin, Hermann Hreidarsson and Younes Kaboul. They all speak of their confidence ahead of the clash, and assure the fans that they aren’t too disheartened following the draw against West Brom.

One familiar face who will be coming to the Bolton game is “Super” Matty Taylor. What a player and what a guy, one who in my opinion is Portsmouth through and through. I was gutted when we sold him, and started a Facebook campaign to get him in the England squad way back when he played in blue. He’s on course for a call-up in my opinion, and I reckon we should all give him a warm reception when he comes this Saturday. He’s backed us to beat the drop as well – find out what he said exactly here.

Niko Kranjcar is another player who is confident ahead of the tie. We all know he’ll be off in the summer (much to my dismay) but his attitude is as professional as it comes, as he is working hard for us. Playing to impress potential purchasers? Possibly – as long we’re getting points, I really don’t mind! Read about it here.

Also in the above article, Ashdown looks to be moving on to Birmingham in the summer after rejecting a contract.

Kaboul, the model professional, has stated that he doesn’t mind being dropped for the Bolton game if it is for the good of the team. Hart has a selection headache – does he pick the reliable Johnson or the on-form Kaboul? See what Kaboul thinks here.

More transfer news, as it is reported that we will be flogging Peter Crouch and Glen Johnson this summer for £20m EACH. I personally don’t know what I think of this – two top players leaving is not something I want but £40m would wipe out a LOT of debt, if not all of it! Read more, and let us know what you think by commenting here.

Djibril Cisse – what would you think if we signed him? Well, we’re apparently linked with a £9m move for the French striker. Read all about it here.

Armand Traore – Pompey’s on-loan left winger, has backed Paul Hart to stay as full time manager! Whatever next – Traore has hardly played under him and seems like he spends more time in North London than he does in Fratton, so his comments are a little unexpected. See what he said here. Speaking of Traore, his loan ends in the summer – would you renew it? Would you pay for his services on the left wing? Check out Rug’s version of Deal or no Deal here and have your say.

Vital Pompey News

Check out Eastney Dave’s weekly toast article here. Easter special this week!

Chix’s continuing look at Pompey players past takes a look at Martyn Busby this week. Never heard of him? I hadn’t but now I’m an expert – check it out here. Definitely worth a read if you want to expand your Pompey knowledge.

I wrote an article this week, in response to a letter that was written in a popular football monthly in which a Pompey “fan” actually would rather us go home! As this is my article, I’m going to shamelessly plug it! Check it out here.

Don’t forget you have the chance to win a ticket to Pompey v Arsenal. This match is now SOLD OUT, so if you don’t have a ticket then this is possibly the only chance you have to win!! Find out all about it here.

Gino’s Fact of the Week

Did you know that Jermain Pennant was excluded from the England U-21 squad after being sent off for punching an opponent in an U-21 game against Croatia? “Who was the unfortunate Croatian?” I can hear you all screaming. Well, it was none other than Pompey dynamo Niko Kranjcar! I hope there’s no love lost between them and I’ll be keeping tabs on how many passes they exchange in today’s game!

Gino’s Teaser

Pompey’s First Foreign Manager was indeed Alain Perrin (Congratulations Gandor1 “mate”)
Pompey’s Heaviest League Defeat was indeed a 10-0 defeat against Leicester City (Congratulations Powered by Pies and Wikipedia!)
The Player who has Played against Portsmouth at Fratton Park the most times was indeed Sir Stanley Matthews (Congratulations Chix, too clever for his own bloody good and an honourable mention to Eastneydave)

This week’s question:

Plenty of players have represented two countries during their careers, but can you name the only player to SCORE for two countries at the World Cup Finals?
