Pompey Malta looks at the candidates to be our next captain this season – read on for more and share your thoughts on who you think this should be.
After the heartache that Portsmouth had to go through in Court Room No. 52, Pompey can now look forward to think of football, again… at last.
When Pompey walks on Ricoh Arena’s pitch on Saturday to start off their Championship campaign, the fan’s eyes will be on who will lead the Blues out of the tunnel. There have been various candidates to take the armband, and although Steve Cotterill has suggested that he has already decided who his captain is, we may take a look at all the players who could possibly be Pompey’s new captain.
Aaron Mokoena – The Axe has been a fan favourite in the latter stages of last season but had a very below-par start to it, when he was Hart’s captain. Mokoena, leading his country in this year’s WC is one of the candidates to wear the armband again this season. Although many may argue that Moka is not a very good player, I can see him as a good leader. However, this does not seem to be the case this season as Cotterill has commented about ‘his captain’ before Moka returned to training!
Michael Brown – Brown was also Pompey’s captain on several occasions last season, but he just couldn’t retain it as the season reached the end. Everyone knows what a fighter is Brown, and this, in my opinion, gives him a good chance to be our captain. He has always been very committed to the cause, and that is why I believe he will lead the team on Saturday. We really need players to fight this season, and Brown will be one of them no matter what. Being captain makes him fight harder. He was also named so against DC United.
David Nugent – Hmmm! No one really would have thought of this prior to pre-season. But Cotterill named him captain twice and although there is a very slim chance that he will be having the armband on Saturday, SC looked pleased with the way Nuge played when he was captain. However, I think that the manager just wanted to give some confidence to Nuge after what seemed to be his last season at Pompey, last term. In my eyes, he isn’t a leader and he simply doesn’t deserve it. He may better inspire himself rather than try to inspire others.
Richard Hughes – The longest serving player. He has been captain before but not for the long term. Hughes is probably the most dedicated player we have this season, but he lacks football quality. Ok, being a captain does not require football quality, but I cannot see Hughes being named in the starting 11 each time we play, even if we haven’t got too many players.
Marc Wilson – He has made it clear that he is ready to take on the armband. Young and very bright as Wilson may be, he is still not captain-mature enough. I would love to see Wilson captain, but I do not think that he will be, at least this season. He has recently forced himself into the first team last year and that doesn’t give him the experience to captain Pompey.
There is also a forgotten man, who has an outside chance of wearing it in the future. Hermann Hreidarsson. The huge Icelandic defender will not be in action for some time, but he posses the qualities that a captain should have. These qualities are the ones Michael Brown posses.
