April is here; we have another 5 league games to play this month as the season carries on and we move closer to the season ending…

I am not sure what is more frightening, the fact that the season is almost over or that the year has ticked around to April already!

Being faced this month are Hartlepool (h), Dagenham (a), Bristol Rovers (h), Northampton (a) and Bury (a).

This is a vital month, no pun intended, and we can be well on the way to safety inside a couple, to a few games before we even play Northampton perhaps?

Either way, if we do the job we need to, then we will end the month safe in another season in league two and looking for what could be a relatively safe midtable(ish) finish!

Hartlepool (h)

Saturday brings the first Fratton game in charge, again, of Andy Awford as we look to build on the win last weekend.

At times we clung on, but it seems that all in all it was always a win we would see through. With confidence growing from that win, and a vocal a large crowd at Fratton, you would like to think that we can secure the rarity of back-to-back wins!

Dagenham (a)

Hopefully we go into this game having won back-to-back games and will be going in search of an unprecedented – in Pompey’s care – hat-trick of wins!

A huge Pompey following will be going to Victoria Road with safety ‘almost’ secured if this goes the way we want and the Hartlepool game prior did too…

Bristol Rovers (h)

Another side embroiled in the relegation battle with us; being at home surely this has to be viewed as a game we look to get all 3pts from?

Under Awford, whilst not throwing caution to the win, I would like to think that unlike his predecessor he will go into this with the intention of winning and not just not losing. A potentially pivotal game that is virtually a ‘must win’…

Northampton (a)

If Bristol Rovers was one that I viewed as ‘potentially pivotal’ then Northampton could be colossus!

Worst case scenario, depending on how other games go before this and how the Cobblers’ results go, this is a ‘must not lose’ game but could also be viewed as a ‘must win’.

As above, unlike Richie Barker, I would think that the mentality from Awford would be to win this game and not just avoid defeat – all being well, in many ways, this will basically be ‘academic’ and ultimately prove to be more important for them than it is us…

Bury (a)

Last weekend Bury did us a big favour by beating Northampton, well hammering them really 3-0, but of course from their point of view they did themselves more of a favour as it helped their relegation chances.

Survival will be something that both sides will hope is secured by the time this game is played?

If it is we could see quite an interesting game, or a typical drab ‘end of season’ affair! All being well we are safe whatever happens but IF we need a win I would like to hope we can get it…

Monthly hopes…

6pts from 18pts on offer last month was poor, fortunately though half of that amount came in our final game!

For some of Barker’s resign I followed the ‘we get what we can how we can’ mentality he adopted, and accepted that it was ‘results over performances’ that were needed but it became abundantly clear that this was not going to be enough whatever way you looked at it.

Once it was clear he had ‘lost the dressing room’, which given his thoughts and comments often shared, was little surprise there was no way back. Admitting that you basically ‘do not care’ anymore was the final straw…

The appointment of Awford raised morale, on and off the pitch, and players came back into the fold that had been frozen out. His appointed will not be a ‘miracle cure’ – or will it? – but you would hope it helps.

It is difficult not to get carried away, but if last weekend is anything to go by hopefully things can carry on and we can have our best month of the season, our best month in years?

I have basically thought that we would go the month unbeaten!

Maybe I have got carried away somewhat but I would like to think that something along the lines of 9-11pts from the 15pts on offer is what I have in mind – like I say perhaps getting carried away…

What do you think?
