Once you have ‘Chewed The Fat’ all that remains is gristle. Read on to find out the one topic that didn`t get the air time it deserved and is therefore this weeks ‘gristle’

Welcome to another issue of the new weekly article entitled ‘The Gristle’

Unlike its’ parent article ‘Chew The Fat’ – A weekly on-line debate where you fire questions at me – ‘The Gristle’ turns the tables and asks for your opinion on one topic that was raised during Thursday’s debate but not discussed in any great depth, and in my opinion, deserves more air-time.

This week’s selection focuses on ‘The Captain’s Armband’

I’m not for a minute going to be naive enough to ask you who should captain Pompey next season – We only have ten players for God`s sake! – But of that ten, a number have skippered a club or their country at some stage in their career.

Last season Pompey’s captain’s armband got tossed around the changing room more than a pancake gets tossed around the kitchen on Shrove Tuesday. Brown, Mokoena, Lawrence, Kitson and co. all wore the armband with varying results yet to me, not one of them truly commanded the role.

This coming season we have Norris and now Pearce who were both considered successful skippers of their clubs to add to the list of potential suitors so what I want to know is …

‘What Makes A Good Club Captain ?’

Yep, I want to hear your opinion on what attributes you expect to see from whoever has the privilege to lead our team out of the tunnel next season.

Perhaps you feel it should be our best player, the one player that is clearly going to be the first name on the team-sheet week in week out.

Maybe you think it should be somebody that identifies or connects with the crowd and understands what it means to be captain of this great club

You may believe it should be the player with the most respect in the dressing room, or even the elder statesman of the team, perhaps.

Or maybe you have a contrary view and don`t consider the role of the skipper important and feel the only function they perform is to call ‘heads’ or ‘tails’ when the referee flips a coin in the air before the start of each match.

Whatever you thoughts I want to know what you think.

So here’s your chance to have your say

The question once again…

‘What Makes A Good Club Captain?’

Post your thoughts below
