Sunday Toast – the Baker’s dozen

Not that Toast is superstitious but is there a number between twelve and fourteen?

Semi-Final Woes

In our continuing tale of things that went wrong on Semi-final day we turn to the goings on in deepest Southsea. Here we find Mike, a lifelong fan who could not face the trip to Wembley or even breakfast and a pint at the local, hiding behind his sofa.

Furiously texting those at the stadium with messages such as ‘what the @@@ is going on?’ and daring to catch only short glimpses of the game. Then on 54 minutes Pompey score and Mike celebrates by giving his Coffee table an almighty thump at which point the table disintegrates.

Where will Mike watch the final? Toast suggests you do not invite him!! The table we are told, by a local carpenter, should be fit for the final!!

The FA Rule OK

Toast has been sniffing around and found on the FA site their rules concerning tickets.

‘The FA has not authorised any ticket agencies or so-called ‘ticket-finder’ companies to sell tickets to The FA Cup Final.

The FA has not authorised any company or person to sell tickets to The FA Cup Final for more than the face values.

It is a criminal offence for a company or an individual to sell, or offer to sell, tickets to The FA Cup Final unless they have been authorised to do so by The FA.

The FA strongly recommends that you only purchase tickets through authorised channels; tickets, which have been sold by, unauthorised companies or people automatically become void and the ticket holder will not be granted access to Wembley Stadium.

If you believe that a company or an individual may be committing an offence you should report them to your local police force.’

Interesting theory but action, we see sweet FA.

Birthdays

20th April Laurie Milligan will be 50, Alan McLoughlin 41, Nikos Kyzeridis 37
22nd April Scott McGarvey 45, Lee Sandford 40, Steve Soley 37, Darren Moore 34,
23rd April Bobby Campbell 71,
24th April Jimmy Dickinson would have been 83,
25th April CB Fry would have been 136.

Names there you either know or you don’t. Alan McLoughlin without doubt Pompey’s best player of the 90s and Jimmy Dickinson probably the greatest ever Pompey player.

CB Fry was a famous cricketer and all-round sportsman around the turn of the twentieth century. He played 26 tests for England and captained his country. In 1893 he equalled the world long jump record. He played Rugby Union for the Barbarians and other clubs and won one England football cap. He played as a guest on a couple of occasions for Pompey in 1902/03.

Few remember that Bobby Campbell played for Pompey before managing them. Signed from his native Liverpool in 1961, Bobby a wing half by trade made 61 appearances netting twice in 5 years before moving to Aldershot for a short stay. He returned to join Pompey’s training staff under George Smith. Bob led Pompey to the Third Division title in 1982/83 and was sacked at the end of the next season being replaced by Alan Ball. Campbell also managed Chelsea in the early 1990s.

Does anyone remember Laurie Milligan?

Give us a P please Bob

Pompey XI’s are pouring in – well I have a few and have been promised countless – and this week’s comes from Owenspompey. It is –

Poom
Pethick
Price
Peron
Primus
Perrin
Powell
Piper
Preki
Parker
Pointer

Sub; Panapolous

Some interesting names there Owens and I assume the Piper is Norman and the Parker Cliff. Last saw Robbie Pethick working in a pub in East Meon!!

Wright Out

So Ian Wright has walked out on Match of the Day to a hail of derision from the media. However Pompey fans may wish that it was the other MOTD panel pundits that were on their bikes.

Anyone who watched the BBC coverage of the Semi Final will testify that there was not one good word spoken about Pompey in the whole coverage. Fair enough, we did not play well at the start but we are a good side and do not deserve that treatment.

Ian Wright is famous for saying it like it is and not carrying any prejudices against teams or players. Sadly the same does not apply to Hansen, Lawrenson and Lineker. Toast will say the wise money is on Wrighty joining the Sky Sports Saturday panel.

See you soon guys and gals and keep those teams and ideas trickling in!
