Peter Storrie has today told The News, no made it ‘abundantly clear’, that Jermain Defoe – who, if true had the nerve to ask for a ‘loyalty bonus!’ – will be the last ‘big name departure’ this month despite continuing speculation: ‘let me make it abundantly clear, there will be no more players sold.

‘We do not need to sell any more players. Jermain wanted to go, so he went, and I can assure you he will be the only one.

‘As far as anyone else wanting to leave, there have been no others speaking to me about it whatsoever.

‘Everyone else is perfectly happy at this football club.

‘At the end of the day, you want to keep a player like Jermain Defoe but clearly his head had been turned.

‘When you get in that situation, sometimes you can persuade players to stay – other times it’s quite clear they have no intention of changing their mind.

‘Really, with Jermain that was that – his mind was made up and he wanted to go.

‘Of course it was disappointing, but there was nothing we could do about it. He had made his position quite clear.

‘In the end we got a good deal for him. Effectively, we got him on loan for a year and have made £6m profit in the process.’

So, Storrie insists that Defoe is the last high profile name that will be sold, ‘fringe players’ that have already been told they can go, or expressed a desire to go will but we are now looking to bring in some names: ‘but that’s it, none of the others will be leaving. We are now concentrating on bringing others in and strengthening the squad.’

I will be honest I do find it hard to know what to believe from him at times, but always hope that a man in his position at the club would be honest with us, so I do think I believe him in as much as others ‘do not want to go’ and those here want to be here, but it would still be interesting to see what our stance would be if offers did come in for others however…

As always though action speak louder than words, so lets follow up these words with these positive actions and get some of these dealings we want to do, and are being linked with, sewn up – and ideally by the weekend in time for Citeh, a match that we need a result in big time.
