Sol Campbell deputised for England captain John Terry at the weekend in the Euro 2008 qualifier with Estonia, he is set to continue with Terry ruled out of the Russia match.

Terry had initially been a doubt for both qualifiers but then appeared to have recovered for the trip to Russia, but having suffered a relapse on Tuesday he was ruled out now Campbell will retain his place.

An England victory this afternoon will book our place at Euro 2008 – something that looked quite unlikely a few months ago.

If we make it we could be watching England with at least two Pompey players – David James and Campbell – in the squad, 50 odd years after we last had a Pompey player going to a major finals with England.

I am delighted to see Campbell play again, as I want to see Pompey players not only in the England squad, but also playing but from a slightly selfish Pompey point of view I worry what affects this might have on him? It will mean 3 matches in a week for him when we face Wigan at the weekend.

On the other hand this could be exactly what he needs? A run of matches to really test him and get things sorted.
