With pre-season training on the horizon Dave_S139 looks at what he feels the squad needs – read on.
Steve Cotterill’s first job will be to assemble a squad that is worthy of starting pre-season training in two weeks time. Yes, two weeks!!!
At the moment we have: David James, Liam O’Brien, Rocha, Mokoena, Hreidarsson, Ben Haim, Wilson, Belhadj, Ward, Sowah Mullins, Diop, Brown, Hughes, Boateng, Ritchie Utaka, Webber, Smith, Kanu. On the assumption that we will lose Mokoena, Ben Haim, Belhadj, Diop, Boateng and Utaka – and knowing that both Hreidarsson and Webber won’t be available much before Christmas – that leaves us with two keepers (assuming Jamo stays (?)), four defenders (assuming Rocha stays), three midfield players (assuming that Mullins doesn’t go to Swindon or somebody else) and two strikers (one of which will give you a good 30 minutes).
So, I guess we need one (maybe two) goalkeepers; probably four or five defenders (two or three lefties and two for the right side; five or six midfield players including wide players for both sides, and three strikers.
That’s possibly another 15 players. Hopefully, Steve Cotterill is spending Father’s Day on the phone.
