Will Paul Cook’s man interest him at Wigan though?

Gary Roberts, along with Michael Smith, has basically been told by Kenny Jackett he’s surplus to requirements at Fratton Park.

Roberts hasn’t featured too much for Pompey during pre-season and was left out of the Blues squad to face Bournemouth at the weekend – Smith’s been troubled by injury but he too was overlooked.

Both have a year on their contracts but Jackett’s pretty much told the News they can leave and have been told as much.

‘Gary is fully fit and has been this week, as has Michael Smith. They haven’t been selected. There are a high number of players in the squad. If you are looking at the front four positions, in whatever formation you want to play, there are 10 players for four positions in whatever system you play. That’s too many.’

Yes, they can leave, having failed to impress Jackett so far, and interest has been shown in both but the Blues boss went on to admit a departure isn’t ‘imminent’ or ‘realistic.’

Jackett added: ‘We’ve not necessarily spoken about it directly (Roberts leaving). But, for Gary anyway and Michael Smith, the situation is they haven’t been selected. That’s purely on what I’ve seen so far. I’ve had several calls about both, but nothing that is imminent or realistic.’

Smith, well his likely exit wasn’t ever really in doubt was it? However, as much as Roberts’ powers waned last season it was thought he still had something to offer as a ‘luxury’ player but all things considered a Fratton exit is probably the best for all concerned.
